New York

Currently, Learn Everywhere legislation has not been introduced in New York. However, this page provides students and families with information about available options for earning credit for out-of-classroom learning. While Learn Everywhere allows for program providers to be approved to offer credit-bearing learning opportunities, for the programs listed below, it is the student’s responsibility to submit an application and complete the program requirements.

Academic Credit For Out-of-Classroom Learning

Credit by Examination

A student may earn a maximum of 6 ½ units of credit without completing units of study if the student passes a state-developed or state-approved examination in a given high school subject with a score of at least 85 percent and passes an oral examination or successfully completes a special project to demonstrate proficiency. This option is available for those students seeking to accelerate, which allows them to take additional classes or to possibly graduate prior to their cohort date.

Independent Study

Students may earn a maximum of 3 units of elective credit towards a Regents diploma through independent study. The independent study shall be:

  • academically rigorous and aligned to New York State learning standards;
  • overseen by a teacher knowledgeable and experienced in the subject area of the independent study;
  • based on a syllabus on file for each independent study; and
  • of comparable scope and quality to classroom work that would have been done at the school district awarding the credit.
