Education Freedom Account Program Launches in Texas, Expanding Options for Families

Texas families began submitting applications today for the state’s new Education Freedom Account (EFA) program. The application window opened February 4, 2026, and runs through March 17, 2026. Awards will be determined through a lottery process conducted by priority category.

Why This Matters

  • Backed by a $1 billion investment
  • Launching in 2026–2027 as the largest ESA rollout in U.S. history
  • Expected to serve 100,000+ students in its first year

Early Application Snapshot

  • Because the Texas EFA program uses a lottery system, families have the full application window to apply. Submitting an application earlier does not increase the likelihood of selection.

What We’re Saying

“Today’s launch marks a major milestone for Texas families and reflects the scale and seriousness of the Education Freedom Account program. Backed by a historic $1 billion investment, this program is designed to expand access to flexible learning options while ensuring a fair and accessible application process for families statewide.

“We are grateful to Acting Comptroller Hancock and his team for their leadership and for delivering a smooth, well-executed rollout. Their work has ensured families have clear guidance, a reliable application experience, and confidence as Texas prepares to launch the largest education savings account program in the nation.”
