Utah’s Education Transformation: Choice at the Heart

The news: the Utah Fits All Scholarship (UFAS) program lets families pick education options that work best for their kids—and it’s working.

What’s Happening: Real Families, Real Results

Utah families aren’t picking one path. They’re combining tutoring, therapy, microschools, private schools, and hybrid learning, even working with local public schools. Whatever fits their kids. Utah Education Fits All, a nonprofit that supports families in the program, interviewed several parents who shared how the program helped their families.

Some families found that Utah Fits All scholarships empowered them to rise above the struggles they faced in the traditional school environment.

Armando’s family experienced a dramatic transformation. His three children were bored and unchallenged in their assigned school, but with UFAS, they enrolled in a private school where they’re now academically challenged. Grades improved, and they’ve developed a newfound love for learning.

Rachel, a single mother from Salt Lake City, found a microschool perfect for her three boys. When the economy shifted and she lost her business, affording tuition became impossible. Scholarships arrived at a crucial time, allowing her sons to continue in an environment that feels like a second family.

Other families realized that their homeschooling journeys could be enhanced with UFAS as well.

Melissa homeschools her three children and supplements with a part-time private school focused on hands-on learning. After realizing their assigned school wasn’t a good fit for her oldest, the scholarship alleviated financial constraints and empowered her to access diverse curricula tailored to each child’s learning style.

Kelly, a homeschooling mom of five, including two with autism, struggled to provide the comprehensive education she envisioned. With her background in education, she understood the importance of tailoring learning to each child’s needs. UFAS opened doors to resources that empower her children to thrive, igniting their passion for learning.

The Big Picture

This isn’t a pilot program anymore. It’s how education works in Utah today.

  • Some families use their scholarship for weekly tutoring
  • Others cover full-time tuition at a school they choose
  • Most land somewhere in between

Education is a journey for each kid, and families get to chart their own course.

What’s Next?

As more families discover what’s possible, new providers and models will emerge. The system will adapt because families are already moving forward. With continued legislative support and community engagement, the future of education in Utah is promising.
